Safety at Home: A Checklist

 

Two-Thirds of all injuries that require a trip to the emergency room for young children occur in the home. If you keep an eye on your kids and follow this advise, you can prevent most household injuries.

  • Cover electrical outlets, and keep cords that could get around their necks out of your child's reach.

  • Keep medicines out of reach too, including vitamins, and pain relievers.

  • Set your hot water thermostat to no more than 120° F to prevent scalding.

  • When cooking, turn all pot handles inward so that curious hands cannot grab them.

  • Keep toys with small parts out of the hands of babies and small children.

  • Purchase only toys that are age appropriate for your children.

  • Install window guards on all second-storey and higher windows.

  • Use cabinet locks to keep children away from dangerous objects and cleaning supplies.

  • Keep first- aid kit in your house and car.

  • If you have a pool or pond, water tank install a fence around it with a childproof gate.

  • Keep WC lids closed and/or lock your toilets and bathrooms to prevent drowning.

  • Place non-skid mats both in the bathtub and on the bathroom floor to prevent falls.

  • Keep matches/ lighters and sharp instruments away from reach of children.
