Checks show pollution exceeds normal limitBy Dharmender

CHECKS on the noise pollution at a quarry near USJ 23 has shown
that that it is beyond the allowed limit.
Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) deputy president Arpah Abdul
Razak said the council had sent its environment officers to check
the noise level after receiving complaints from residents.
He said the noise reading reached 100dbs when the maximum allowed
was 30dbs.
Arpah was speaking in response to complaints from USJ 23
residents that the quarry was noisy and operated round the clock.
The quarry was also said to operate on weekends.
He said the council could not stop the quarry from operating
beyond 6pm because the company was not licensed by MPSJ.
She said the permit to operate a quarry had to be obtained from
the Land Office and the Department of Environment (DOE) and only
these two authorities could take any action.
She said the council had forwarded the residents' complaints and
its own findings to the DOE.
Residents, who met Arpah on Friday, said they were happy to learn
the council had issued the quarry operator a notice over the noise
level and operating hours.
"The quarry has stopped work at 11pm for the past two days but it
is still late," a resident, Robert Chan, said.
He said the residents would use the statistics provided by the
council on the noise level to report to the Petaling Land office.
