Buffer zone not enough for telecommunication tower I AM
writing on behalf of the 35% of USJ 23 residents who are affected by
the huge telecommunication transmission tower erected next to our
housing estate.
Little did we know that the structure about 50m away from the
nearest house is emitting magnetic waves, which is harmful to health
until the issue was highlighted in the press recently.
It is an irony that the guidelines issued by the Housing and
Local Government Ministry about five years ago has been blatantly
ignored by the Subang Jaya Municipal Council.
The authority even admitted that the tower was erected illegally
more than two years ago and no action was taken against the company.
It is shocking that the tower is only 50m away from USJ 23 when
the guidelines stipulate that the minimum buffer zone should be
150m.
The proposal from Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Khir Toyo that
all residents affected by the tower be given free health examination
is laudable.
We hope that the Cabinet will not only come out with standard
guidelines immediately so that the issue can be put to rest once and
for all, but also ensure that all local authorities carry out
enforcement diligently to ensure that all illegally erected towers
be dismantled immediately.
