The
serenity of this quiet neighbourhood in USJ18 on a warm Sunday morning was
interrupted by the strong presence of the police force. No, there was no
major outbreak of crime to warrant their presence here but rather their
big boss YDH Dato’ Mohd Fauzi Shaari, the Acting Chief Police Officer of
Selangor was here to launch the campaign codenamed “Rumah Selamat Semasa Bercuti” in conjunction with the Chinese New Year exodus. In fact,
in his opening address, he said that he already felt the spirit of Gong Xi
Fa Cai when two lions dancing to the beat of the drums and gongs welcomed
him.
USJ18 was privileged to be entrusted
this time round with organising the launch. YDH Datuk Mohd
Fauzi Saari really minced his words when he said that the police in this
modern era had to be “siap sedia untuk turun ke padang” in order to be
more intimate with the residents. Literally, the whole police force was at
the USJ18 padang where the launch was held today at 10.00am. The
residents both near and far, some 100 of them, were seen mingling with
them. The two white lions (should have been horses) were roped in to add
sound, sight and action to the occasion. He further praised USJ as one the
more active community in crime prevention as compared to other areas in the
state of Selangor. By the same token, he also advised residents here not
to have a confrontational stance with criminals and also not to take the
law into our own hands.
Also present was the OCPD of Shah Alam,
Assistant Commissioner Tuan Hussin Hj Ismail - USJ and Shah Alam fall
under his administration, the Subang Jaya State Assemblyman YB Dato’ Lee
Hwa Beng, Chief Inspector Mohd Rizal Kamarudin, the new police chief of the USJ8
Balai Polis and En. Kamal Affandi Hashim from the Malaysian Crime
Prevention Foundation. There were in addition, many other officers from
the rank and file of various Shah Alam police divisions.
Among the first to speak was Mr. Raymond
Tan, Chairman of USJ18 Neighbourhood Watch. He thanked the police for the
relentless effort put in during the first campaign last
month. He said many positive feedbacks were received. Many of those who
registered said that they were touched by the fact that the police
actually dropped by their houses as evidenced by their cards dropped into
their mailboxes to indicate their visits.
In addressing the Sunday morning crowd some
of whom were in their Sunday best, the OCPD of Shah Alam, Tuan Hussin Hj
Ismail mentioned that this “usaha cara sendiri mencegah jenayah bersama
mencerminkan perpaduan dan mesti dikekal sebagai norma budaya untuk
generasi yang akan datang.” He shared some statistics that showed the
earlier Hari Raya/Christmas/New Year campaign managed to reduce the crime
rate by 2.7% compared to the corresponding period the previous year. He
said that the Shah Alam Police District conducted 1,551 patrols during the
festive period in their crime prevention round. Of the 65, break in
reported, only one happened to be a house registered with them.
Next to speak was our Yang Berhormat. I
wondered whether he was carried away when he expressed his heartfelt
thanks on behalf of the USJ residents to the police force. No one expected
anything more than that but to everybody’s bewilderment including the
acting CPO, Datuk Lee Hwa Beng committed to present to the USJ8 Balai
Police, a Perodua Kancil to assist them in increasing and intensifying
their patrolling in our community. Due to this win-win situation, the
residents were so supportive that they insisted that since USJ is an
affluent community, a Proton Waja would be more appropriate. The Acting
CPO chipped in to say that he would be proud and honored to receive this
community gesture. On this high note, he officially launched the campaign
when the two lions that were prancing around delivered some posters and
forms to him. These were then handed to the various representatives from
the rest of the Neighbourhood Watches, Rukun Tetangga, USJ Residents’
Association and Jawatankuasa Penduduk (JKPs) who will them disseminate
them to an estimated 25,000 houses in this vicinity.
At the press conference later, the acting
CPO went into details about the mechanism of the campaign, its importance
and the role to be played by the residents. The forms, besides getting the
residents to fill in their particulars such as their names, addresses and
contact numbers, also have a section where residents are required to find
out the names and numbers of their immediate neighbours. Dato’ Mohd Fauzi
Saari added the move was important because it would introduce the
‘semangat kejiranan’ (neighbourly spirit).
The forms are available from your local
representatives and upon completion, submit to the nearest Balai Police.
Alternatively, residents
can also register online by completing the form from the
USJ18 Website,
http://www.usj18.nwatch.net.my/forms.cfm?id=2 or
they can also download the forms directly at
http://www.hwabeng.org.my/form.htm
and fax/send it to the police at the number indicated on the forms.
